about

24bit/48 kHz WAV-file

The debut single release from Field Kit, Counterfeit’s strings immediately envelop you with a warm, deep, bass-heavy melancholy. It is strangely counter-intuitive - mischievous melodies emerge, but disappear as soon as they have hooked you. The effect is of an impression that is only delicately visible.

At once novel and familiar, we’re left wondering if is this a simulation, a virtual reality or a kind of sonic déjà vu? From the opening plucked, metallic tones, there’s a sense of something delicately painful, of faded memory. What follows is an immersive and carefully guided musical experience, alternating between bittersweet sharpness and gentle emotional warmth.

You can immediately hear the virtuosity and simplicity of their approach in Counterfeit. While they choose minimalism over overproduction, their carefully selected palette of sounds nonetheless creates a sense of haunting nostalgia, a broken rhythm of images. What we’re left with is a sound that flows directly and unmistakably into the heart and body, a sensation of immersion that’s reminiscent of climbing the stairs in Berghain, your body and heartbeat one step behind.

Counterfeit is released on July 31, 2020 on Nonostar Records
